For a long time, Nick told me to do a piece on the slave trade, but I was reluctant. You would think that for an African born black artist like myself, it would be a no brainer to paint this. There was a reason why I did not want to do this and this is why: each time I look at an image of slavery, it is very disturbing.One day, the inspiration came to me. I was going to paint this piece in a way that was not disturbing.
